CAPTURED TRENCH & GUN
FRENCH MILITARY DISTINCTION FOR WALTON SCOT
Private William H. Short, of the Liverpool Scottish, whose home is at 8, Lenthall Street, Walton, Liverpool, was awarded the French Croix de Guerre on November 6 for conspicuous gallantry in the charge at Hooge on June 16 last. With two corporals he attacked a trench held by thirty Germans with a machine-gun. They killed all the occupants, captured the gun and used it in repelling a counter-attack. Private Short is nineteen years of age. He joined the Liverpool Scottish in November last and was sent out to the front in February.
